County to work with Navy to rehab part of Tijuana River Valley Regional Park

Part of trail system at Tijuana River Valley Regional Park File photo courtesy of San Diego County The county Board of Supervisors on Wednesday gave the U S Navy the green light to rehabilitate acres within the Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Voting on consent supervisors cleared the way for a million grant and related contract to pay for cleaning up three sites in the park The Naval Base Coronado Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration Venture is providing the grant according to information provided to the board The clean-up project is expected to begin this fall and be completed next summer According to the county s Land Use and Ecosystem Group the constituents land is managed by Parks Recreation and right now contain s dilapidated structures underground utilities foundations debris and non-native plants County representatives declared they are collaborating with Naval Base Coronado to manage natural information in the Tijuana River Valley with the goal of increasing environmental resiliency near the military base which serves as an extra protective buffer The U S -Mexico dividing line sewage garbage dilemma has long closed beaches and caused robustness issues for particular residents Untreated wastewater from Mexico s Tijuana River crosses the demarcation into the United States portion of the river valley before washing out to sea just south of Imperial Beach Although he voted yes Supervisor Jim Desmond revealed he was concerned about prospective risks including gastrointestinal illness bacteria levels and hazardous gases Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer stated she was glad to have the military helping with the project and hopes it leads to more assistance We re continuing to make investments to clean the Tijuana River Valley she added It s not enough but it s something and every little bit helps
