Ex-Oregon Duck linebacker sentenced to 16 years for fatal Logan Heights shooting

Torrodney Prevot while he played football at the University of Oregon Courtesy of University of Oregon Athletics A former University of Oregon football participant who fatally shot a man in Logan Heights was sentenced Friday to years in state prison Torrodney Prevot a high school football recruit out of Texas who went on to become a linebacker at Oregon before moving to San Diego killed Devin Payton of Chula Vista on Aug Prevot was initially charged with murder in the development but pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and a gun allegation with a stipulation to the -year prison term Deputy District Attorney Melissa Mack mentioned the killing was an entirely tragic and horrible situation in which whatever happened between Prevot and Payton had concluded but Mr Prevot decided to re-engage During a lengthy comment at his Friday morning sentencing Prevot explained I never for a second wished Devin to die and I fully regret pulling that trigger and taking Devin s life that night But Prevot described what happened as an extremely isolated event and announced he was not a malicious person Payton s parents four siblings and about two dozen other family members attended the sentencing Among those who spoke was Payton s mother Tracie Brown who disclosed her son had big dreams and was an avid music lover who created his own music People naturally gravitated to him because he made them feel seen and heard she declared Police reported Prevot and a relative argued with Payton one morning in a parking lot on Imperial Avenue At specific point Prevot went to his car retrieved a gun and shot Payton in the chest Prevot and his relative fled the scene and police detected the wounded victim just before a m Payton died at a hospital about half an hour later Prevot played for the Ducks from to In just before his senior year Prevot was suspended by the squad and later by the university after a woman accused him of assaulting her Prevot s defense attorney in the homicide scenario Troy Owens mentioned Prevot was never arrested or charged in connection with those statements and that his accuser later recanted her suggests
